Before & After Nightstands Refinished in Shale Stone from Paint Couture

Before – Old desk separated to make a pair of nightstands

What a great find! I love re-purposing old desks into nightstands, but the work of separating them and repairing after is not always fun. Lucky for us, someone else tackled that job! Although no repairs from separating them were needed, there were plenty of other repairs! Honesty, I am thrilled with the way they turned out because we literally had to fill, repair, sand, and sculpt all of the trim on the fronts. It was tedious, but worth it!

Paint Couture Shale Stone Painted Nightstand

In the past, we have separated several desks to make a matching set of nightstands or end tables. I love that they are unique, typically have awesome detail, are the perfect height, and slender enough for small spaces!

We planned to paint them in white, but after applying a base coat of Shale Stone from Paint Couture, we loved the look and went with it. One of the best attributes of Paint Couture is the incredible coverage!

A little tip when working with dark or reddish colored wood: There is a good chance you’ll get bleed through. You can help to prevent this by applying 2 coats of Clear Shellac. Since it is clear, you’ll still see the original wood when you distress. For extra good measure, Paint Couture is great as it will also help combat the bleed. These pieces were pretty rough and I though for sure I would have to do a really distressed or textured finish to disguise it, but Paint Couture saved the day! I was really impressed with how nice they turned out and with very little effort aside from the repairs!

Paint Couture Shale Stone with Dead Flat topcoat. No sheen, but you still get awesome protection!

I loved the simple look of these and did not want to add any sheen so I went with the Dead Flat Topcoat. This has been one of our go-to choices for topcoat lately. You get the dull, low sheen look but your pieces are still protected!

Square, gray knob from Hobby Lobby
Square, glass knobs to finish the look.

These gray square knobs we found at Hobby Lobby were perfect! Of course they did not have enough so we had to order them…..which also meant we had to wait, wah! Do you get excited when you find the perfect hardware for a piece!? We do, lol!

Paint Couture

If you have not tried Paint Couture, I promise you will not be disappointed! Their products are amazing. They are easy to work with, self leveling, very durable, the topcoats are superior (Trust me, it will even withstand water rings from your husbands sweaty water glass……..I know from experience!) Mary & I also love their texture products, metallic paints, and amazing glazes that dry completely leaving NO tacky feeling! Check out the full line of Paint Couture HERE [Commisioned Link]
